Timeline

March 2023

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) approved the request for the proposed School of Population Health to become a standalone school, separate from the School of Medicine, effective April 1.

The new school would consist of the four founding departments:

  • Department of Biostatistics
  • Department of Epidemiology
  • Department of Health Policy
  • Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences

July 2023

The School of Population Health (SOPH) began to function as a school.
January 2024 SOPH submitted its Initial Application Submission (IAS) to Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) requesting permission to transition from an accredited program of public health to a school of public health. This is the first step to seek accreditation as a school of public health.
March 2024 CEPH formally acted to approve VCU’s application to transition to the school of public health category of accreditation. The school is now in the self-study period of accreditation review.
May 2024 The School of Population Health hosted its first graduation, which included its first graduates from the new cancer health equity science concentration in the MPH program — the first program of its kind in the nation and a symbol of the innovation and excellence anticipated from VCU’s newest school.
June 2024 SCHEV granted approval for the School of Population Health to change its name to the School of Public Health as it continues through CEPH’s accreditation process. The entire self-study, site visit, and full accreditation process is estimated to take about two to three years to complete.
